GDC Migration Group at IMISCOE 2024 and Next Steps for 2025
We did it! The GDC Migration Working Group was present at the IMISCOE 2024 workshop with two sessions. We are grateful to everyone who made this participation possible, as it required a lot of prior planning. Although we initially envisioned a closed meeting between the Migration Working Group (GDC) and the Standing Committee on Reflexivities (SC-IMISCOE), the event was adapted for a mixed audience, which turned out to be both a challenge and a growth opportunity.
What worked:
– Building community through shared meals and informal moments.
– Clear assignment of responsibilities among Migration Working Group members during the event.
– The workshop topic generated great interest, with more attendees than we expected.
What could have been better:
– Ideally, a closed meeting would have been ideal to work on concrete projects between the Migration Working Group and SC.
– It would have been helpful to communicate the structure and objectives of the workshop more clearly in advance, especially on the website.
– Including online participants was challenging due to the change of plans and the number of people present. If we opt for a hybrid format in the future, we will need more resources to ensure smooth interaction between in-person and remote participants.
Recently, we received confirmation that one of our workshop proposals was accepted for the 2025 IMISCOE Annual Conference in Paris (Aubervilliers) and online:
Additionally, our other panel proposal, “Decentering the teaching of migration studies: A review of syllabi and pedagogical practices”, is currently on the conference’s Reserve List. We are keeping our fingers crossed for it to be accepted as well!
Next Steps:
– Reflect on how to improve logistics for future hybrid and in-person participations. Thanks to everyone who made this workshop possible and to those who joined us at IMISCOE 2024!
