Bo-Seon Shim

Bo-Seon Shim was born in Seoul, Korea and studied sociology at Seoul National University for his B.A. and M.A. degree and received his Ph. D. from sociology department, Columbia University. His research has focused on sociology of arts and culture. His doctoral dissertation investigated the transformation of nonprofit arts organization and cultural movement in relation with identity politics and cultural policies in the case of Asian American arts from 1970s to 2000s. Currently, his research focuses on the precarious careers and identities of artists as they are interlocked with Neo liberal market development and the state policies. He is also a professional poet and writer and has published four poetry books two of which – Fifteen Seconds without Sorrow (2008) and Someone Always in the Corner of My Eye – were translated in English and published in the United States. He has been active in various artistic, social, and political activities as a researcher and cultural worker. Currently he is an associate professor in the graduate school of communication and arts at Yonsei University, Korea.
