Migration Working Group

In the Migration Working Group, we seek to push beyond the boundaries of established migration theory to explore decolonized and decentred theoretical approaches to help us understand human mobilities. In doing so, we engage a multidisciplinary approach that offers multiple perspectives while challenging the role of the researcher. We are people close to academia, but not only. We are of many ages and stages of our careers. We rotate coordination of the group on an annual basis.

Activities

  • Collective presentations of our topics of interest
  • Collaborative publications
  • Collective construction of visualization tools for analyzing  migration syllabi.
  • IMISCOE

Our main activity is holding a monthly meeting where we discuss our own work, or our analysis of existing migration studies. One ongoing project is collecting and analyzing syllabi on migration courses to understand how migration studies are taught around the world. Who are the key authors? What are the key concepts? What do they have in common and where do they differ? Another way we do this is by working on an anti-glossary of key terms in migration studies. An anti-glossary decentres because it unsettles global north languages and categories as the starting point for any kind of research, including migration research.

We also are preparing for conferences and publications to share different tools for research, teaching and theorizing migrations.
